The following urban water management institutes have joined forces under the name acwa Aachen Water:
- Institute for Urban Water Management at the RWTH Aachen (ISA)
- Research Institute for Water and Waste Management at the RWTH Aachen University (FiW)
- Testing and Development Institute for Wastewater Technology of the RWTH Aachen (PIA)
Acwa's research spectrum includes basic research, applied research, and scientific support, for example for construction measures and implementations. In addition, a variety of services are offered: from practical applications like approval tests of wastewater plants, laboratory analyses and flow measurements to organisational consulting and technology transfer in Germany and abroad. Acwa stands for innovative and adapted solutions for drinking water supply, wastewater disposal and water quality management. Technical questions are answered in a well-founded way by including energetic, ecological and economic aspects. In addition, acwa's modern research and service work focuses on the development of future scenarios and questions of sustainable resource protection.
A significant part of the work is done in international cooperation, where each acwa institute has different specialist focuses and target regions.
Connected through acwa, the three institutes have some experimental fields and halls on their own, a modern environmental analysis laboratory and numerous subject-specific software applications.
