Filter system for solids separation from wastewater streams with a low-maintenance cleaning concept based on structured pile textiles with defined separation behavior

The energy consumption of wastewater treatment plants for the purification of wastewater depends on the aggregates used. In order to make wastewater treatment as efficient as possible, low-maintenance aggregates are required that allow effective cleaning of the wastewater and are nevertheless energy-efficient and have a low space requirement.

Current situation and outlook

Since the beginning of the project, the first textile samples have been tufted at the Institute for Soil Systems at the RWTH Aachen (TFI e. V.) and first consolidation tests have already been made. At the FiW, the first conceptual designs of the system to be developed and the first tests on the mechanical strength of the tufted pile textiles were made during the same period. Within the framework of the project, a project-accompanying committee was also formed, in which representatives from textile and water management fields can contribute to the success of the project through their expertise. In a first meeting, which took place in September 2020, relevant areas of application and material properties for the pile textiles could already be identified, which are to be verified in the following months through test series. Towards the end of the project period, a demonstrator for long-term tests should be ready for use. The research results will be presented in a design guideline.
